MASSENA, NY - Mrs. Margaret (Peg) Kirkey, 83, of Massena and Ft. Meade, FL, passed away Monday afternoon, December 28, 2009 at Tampa General Hospital. She had been hospitalized for three weeks.
Family and friends are invited to call Monday from 2 – 4 and 7 – 9 at Phillips Memorial Home, Massena. The funeral will be at 10 am Tuesday at the Church of the Sacred Heart, Massena, with the Rev. Donald Manfred officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
She was born on January 24, 1926 in Hermon, NY, the daughter of Roy and Veronica Tiernan Cook. She graduated from Hermon High School and Rochester Business Institute, Watertown branch. After graduation she was employed at the Watertown Daily Times in Watertown, the Agricultural office in Canton, NY, and at the US Navy Office at Alcoa in Massena during WW II.
She married Kenneth Kirkey on August 1, 1945 at Sacred Heart in Massena, Rev. Gerald F. Kellogg officiating. She was employed at the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation in Massena from 1962 until her retirement in 1987. She started as a secretary, and was promoted to Administrative Assistant, Engineering Planner, and Contracting Officer. S
he is survived by her husband; four sons, Gary (Sue), Massena, Jim, Bedford, IN, Bryan (Elizabeth), Atlanta, GA, and Ken, Oakland, CA; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters, Marion Reed, Hermon, Mrs. Francis (Rebecca) Brunet, Trout Lake and Delray Beach, FL, and Rita Blevins, Potsdam, and Wauchula, FL; one brother, Donald (LulaMae) Cook, Hermon; 2 sisters-in-law, Frances McDonald, Massena, and Sister Imelda Kirkey, OSM, Omaha, NE; 1 brother-in-law, Clarence (June) Kirkey, Massena; cousins, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Veronica, and a brother, Bernard.
Peg was a wonderful, giving, woman who will be greatly missed by the many people who loved her. She enjoyed being with and supporting her family and friends. Her interests included charitable work, golf, dancing, line-dancing and tutoring. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, The VFW Auxiliary, VFW Retirees Club, National Association of Federal Employees, and the Raymondville Golf Club. She was co-chair of the Massena MDA Labor Day telethon for 12 years. She volunteered as a Literacy tutor, as a member of the MMH Auxiliary, and for Hospice.
