Governor David A. Paterson issued the
following statement in response to President Obama’s nomination of New
York State Department of Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith for
Solicitor of Labor at the United States Department of Labor.
“Since January of 2007, when she was
appointed as New York’s Commissioner of Labor, Patricia Smith has been
a tireless advocate for hard working New Yorkers. In the last two
years, she has returned the Labor Department to its core mission of
enforcing the labor law by protecting all workers and ensuring that all
employers in New York compete on a level playing field.
“In 2008, the Labor Department collected
and disbursed $24.6 million to more than 17,000 workers across the
State; the largest amount ever collected in more than 100 years at the
Department.
“Commissioner Smith’s investigations
uncovered a variety of abuses of workers. At Jin Shun Incorporated, a
garment contractor located in Long Island City, the Labor Department
found the company was cheating hundreds of workers out of more than $5
million.
“Last year, the Department targeted an
investigation at New York’s car wash industry, uncovering violations in
78 percent of car washes inspected. Violations included minimum wage
and overtime laws.
“New York may be losing one of its most
passionate public servants, but our nation’s workers are gaining an
extraordinary advocate. On behalf of all New Yorkers, I wish her the
greatest success.”
