The Metropolitan Opera’s “The Met: Live in HD” series will continue at the Potsdam Roxy Theater with the presentation of “Der Rosenkavalier,” Richard Strauss’ comic masterpiece of love and intrigue in the 18th century. The live broadcast will take place Saturday, Jan. 9 at 1 p.m., with an encore showing on Sunday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m.
“Der Rosenkavalier” stars SUNY Potsdam alumna Renée Fleming as the aristocratic Marchallin and Susan Graham in the trouser role of her young lover. Music director James Levine conducts a cast that also includes Kristinn Sigmundsson, Christine Schäfer, Thomas Allen and Eric Cutler.
Through a partnership between SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music and Potsdam’s Roxy Theater, nine live and nine encore Metropolitan Opera performances are being presented in Potsdam over the course of the academic year.
The Met’s spectacular series of live, high-definition performance transmissions to 850 venues in 30 countries around the world. This program delivers the grandeur and excitement of world-class opera in startling high definition and digital surround sound with the benefit of English subtitles.
Employing 10 robotic cameras and state-of-the art technology, “The Met: Live in HD” captures the onstage action from striking angles and heightens attention to the narrative elements of both performance and production. Behind-the-scenes features, live interview with cast and crew, insightful short documentaries and bird’s-eye views of the productions offer and unprecedented look at what goes into the staging of an opera.
Ticket prices for live and encore performances are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $12 for students and $9 for youth age 18 and under. Doors open at 11 a.m. The sumptuous spread and friendly atmosphere provides a gathering place to combine fabulous tasting treats with good fellowship, creating a new way to enjoy and support weekend operas in Potsdam. Exact menu is subject to change based upon availability and the inspiration of the chefs. Restaurant walk-ins will be accepted, but it is best to make reservations with the CPS Box Office by the Friday before to ensure that you have a seat.
