On September 9, 2009, at about 10:40p.m., the New York State Police in Plattsburgh investigated a one car fatal automobile accident in the town of Ellenburg.

Christian M. Garceau, age 16, of Ellenburg Center, New York, was operating a 1997 Ford Taurus eastbound on County Route 6, about ¼ mile west of Trombley Road,  in the town of Ellenburg, when he failed to negotiate a sweeping right hand curve. The vehicle left the north shoulder of the roadway, struck large boulders and became airborne. The vehicle came to rest upright and burst into flames. Garceau was not able to exit the vehicle and was deceased at the scene.

The Ellenburg Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire.

On September 10, 2009, an autopsy was conducted at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center in Plattsburgh, New York. The cause of death is pending toxicology results.

Preliminary investigation indicates that speed is a contributing factor in this collision, however, the investigation into the cause of the accident is continuing.
