The works of Shakespeare have inspired more operatic adaptations than those of any other writer. North Country residents will soon be able to experience that synergy, through the Metropolitan Opera’s new production of “Hamlet.” Potsdam’s Roxy Theater will screen “Hamlet” through “The Met: Live in HD” series on Saturday, March 27, with an encore performance broadcast the next day, on Sunday, March 28. Both shows start at 1 p.m.
Simon Keenlyside and German soprano Marlis Petersen will bring their extraordinary acting and singing skills to two of the Shakespeare’s most unforgettable characters in this new production of composer Ambroise Thomas’s “Hamlet.” For the role of Ophelia, the French composer created an extended mad scene that is considered among the greatest in opera.
After the curtain draws to a close, audiences are invited to La Casbah for a buffet-style gala French dinner from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. following both the live and encore broadcasts. Price, including tax and tip, is $30 per person. Reservations are required by March 20 at the latest, although a limited number of last-minute walk-in customers will be accepted. Proceeds from the dinner will go toward supporting the Crane Met Fund.
Ticket prices for live and encore performances are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $12 for students and $9 for youth (age 18 and under). Tickets can be purchased at the Community Performance Series Box Office in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater Lobby in person, by phone at (315) 267-2277 or online at www.cpspotsdam.org. Tickets are also available at Northern Music & Video and the Roxy, both located in downtown Potsdam.
