Matthew J. Flynn IICANTON, NY - Matthew J. Flynn II announced his candidacy for the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators yesterday morning from the Courthouse steps in Canton, NY.

Flynn, 18, is a registered Republican and the youngest to ever contend for a seat on the St. Lawrence County Legislature.  Flynn is currently a Senior at Canton Central School and a Young Republican.

He is running for the District 8 seat now occupied by Democrat Tedra Cobb who is not seeking re-election.  District 8 covers parts of Potsdam, Canton, and Madrid.

Flynn is taking a hardline, fiscally conservative stance on the issues.  On the issue of the county filling vacant positions, Flynn said, "It is never easy to cut funding or eliminate vacant positions; however, for the sake of St. Lawrence County it is necessary."

Quoting from  Martin Luther King Jr.'s legendary speech, Flynn stated that he also has a dream.. that in St. Lawrence County, "residents will no longer be forced to leave the county to find jobs."

Before dozens of supporters, Flynn announced that "As Legislator, I will be your voice of reason. I will be the voice heard across this County; the voice that says, when no one else will “NO MORE TAX INCREASES”.

Flynn opponent for the GOP primary in September will be Madrid Dairy Farmer Kevin D. Acres.  Acres, as a farmer, is already against property tax increases but has stated that he would consider a sales tax increase for the County if necessary to balance the budget.

While Flynn's hardline approach to fiscal conservatism has already garnered him a considerble amount of support, Acres brings more than 20 years experience as a member of the Madrid-Waddington Board of Education and the support that comes with having won that position in public elections several times.
