Kermit Jones, 86, of Edwards

EDWARDS - Kermit K. Jones, age 86, of Edwards, died on November 30, 2009 at his home on Jones’ Pond under the care of his family and Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. 

Kermit was born on January 7, 1923 in Fine, NY. He was a son of the late Harold A. and Olive M. (Watson) Jones. He graduated from Edwards High School in 1942 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII for three years. 

Mr. Jones married Dorothy M. Barry on September 12, 1958 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Fine with Rev. Syril Rapin officiating. The couple lived in Fine until moving to Jones’ Pond in 1976. Dorothy died on April 4, 2002. 

Kermit was an electrician for J&L Steel for 32 years until it closed, and then he went to work for the Potsdam Paper Mill, and Gouverneur Talc Co. before retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Steel Workers Union (SOAR), the VFW and was an avid hunter and fisherman. 

His survivors include a son and his wife, Timothy P. and Connie Jones of Fine, four daughters and their husbands; Mrs. Rick (Susanne) Gearsbeck of South Edwards, Mrs. Brian (Sheri) Sharpe of Richville, Mrs. William (Sheila) Bullock of Edwards, and Mrs. William (Karla) Smith of Colton. Kermit is also survived by his nephew, Larry Boulia of Cary, NC whom they raised, 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. 

He is predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, his brother, Harold D. Jones and his sister Jenny F. Bridgeland. 

Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Edwards on Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8. His funeral service will be on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with lay speaker William Strate officiating. Burial will follow in Gates Cemetery, Edwards. 

Donations in Kermit’s memory may be made to the Edwards Rescue Squad or Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley.
