NORTHERN, NY – Each fall, as they harvest, farmers evaluate how well the corn seed they planted in the spring has produced grain or silage. To assist North Country farmers’ selection of seed for 2010 spring planting, the farmer-driven Northern New York Agricultural Development Program has posted the results of 2009 corn hybrid variety trials online at www.nnyagdev.org.
Cornell University researchers Bill Cox, Jerry H. Cherney and Phil Atkins and Cornell E.V. Baker Agricultural Research Farm Manager Michael H. Davis conducted 2009 corn silage hybrid trials at Greenwood Dairy Farm in Canton, W.H. Miner Agricultural Research Institute in Chazy, and Robbins Farms in Sackets Harbor, NY. The data for the Canton and Chazy trials is posted already; Sackets Harbor trial data is expected to be added to the website soon.
Cox will present the trial data at the 2009 Fall Seed Expo on Friday, December 4 at the Madrid Community Center from 9:30am-4pm. Call Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County at 315-379-9192 by November 30 to register for the program that includes seed company representatives and Mary Beth DeOndarva of Paradox Nutrition presenting “How to Choose Seed Traits with the Cow in Mind.”
The Northern New York Agricultural Development Program selects and prioritizes projects for grants to address agricultural production needs in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties.
