Yesterday, my co-host, James
Pond and I made our CMA Awards predictions. Let’s see how accurate
we were…
Entertainer of the Year honors
went to Taylor Swift. Pond called it. At 19, Taylor is the youngest
artist ever to win this prestigious award. A tearful Taylor exclaimed:
“I will never forget this moment, because in this moment, everything
I ever wanted has just happened to me.”
Male Vocalist of the Year went
to Brad Paisley, who co-hosted the show with Carrie Underwood. Neither
Pond nor I got this one right.
Female Vocalist went to Taylor
Swift… DUH! We agreed on this one.
Darius Rucker nabbed New Artist
of the Year honors, just like I predicted. (JP thought it’d be Zac
Brown.)
Vocal Group of the Year went
to Lady Antebellum!!!!! NOT Rascal Flatts!!!! For the first time
in six years!!!! Both Pond and I predicted this. It was such a joy for
me, to see this talented group take it to the next level.
Vocal Duo of the Year was Sugarland.
Pond was right. Grrr. I thought for sure the CMA board of voters would
give it to Brooks and Dunn as a parting gift to the “divorcing”
duo. I honestly didn’t think Sugarland put out anything particularly
special in the past year.
Album of the Year was Fearless,
by Taylor Swift. Both of us got it right!
Song of the Year, awarded to
the songwriters, went to Jamey Johnson’s “In Color.” I was right!!
(Pond’s pick was “Chicken Fried.”) All three of the song’s composers,
Johnson, James Otto and Lee Thomas Miller were there to accept. Jamey
reminds me of a cross between Charles Manson and my Uncle Bill, when
he had hair.
Single of the Year, awarded
to the artist, was “I Run to You,” by Lady Antebellum. Both Pond
and I flunked this one. But in this case, I was happy to be wrong. I
love Lady A! I understand they are trying for crossover airplay with
this tune at Adult Contemporary radio. I hope they make their crossover
goal a reality!
Musical Event of the Year went
to “Start a Band,” the collaboration between Brad Paisley and Keith
Urban. At least Keith got SOMETHING. (Way too many lovey-dovey
shots of KU and Nicole in the audience for my taste.) BTW, neither James
Pond nor I got this one right either.
Taylor Swift’s “Love Story”
won Video of the Year. I predicted it would. I can’t believe Pond
didn’t agree with me on this one! Sometimes he goes out on a limb
and falls right out of the tree, you know?
As far as performances, I thought
Miranda Lambert did the best. She really ROCKED “White Liar”!!!!
I did not understand the Zac Brown Band doing “Devil Went Down to
Georgia,” what with three #1 hits under their belt and a brand new
single, “Highway 20 Ride,” they could have performed.
Anyway, you can get a good
chuckle out of today’s video, featuring hosts Carrie Underwood (who
won nothing) and Brad Paisley poking fun at, among other things, Brooks
and Dunn’s impending breakup, rewriting the lyrics to the Tammy Wynette
chestnut, “D-I-V-O-R-C-E.” My husband turned to me as we were watching
this and asked: “Is that Ronnie Dunn’s daughter sitting on his lap?”
I replied: “It better be!”
