CANTON, NY - A concert of music by two of England's finest composers,
Gustav Holst (1874-1934) and Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), will
be performed by the University Chorus and String Orchestra on Friday,
November 13, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, November 14, at 4 p.m., in
Gunnison Memorial Chapel at St. Lawrence University. The performances
are open to the public, free of charge.
The String Orchestra, directed by Christian Hosmer, will be
augmented with wind, brass and percussion players from the St. Lawrence
community and the Crane School of Music accompanying the chorus.
Accompanist Barbara Phillips-Farley and organist-in-residence Sondra
Proctor will be featured with the University Chorus, directed by Barry
Torres, along with soprano Alex Jacobs and speaker Reverend Shaun
Whitehead.
Included in the concert are Holst's The Hymn of Jesus and Williams' A Song of Thanksgiving.
The University Chorus, Canton's community chorus, is sponsored by the
St. Lawrence University music department. Membership in the chorus is
drawn from the local community as well as faculty, staff and students
of St. Lawrence.
The String Orchestra performs a diverse assortment of musical styles
including classical, baroque, traditional, contemporary and popular
music, using the various techniques required to play them, and performs
both on and off campus.
