Evelyn BockusGOUVERNEUR, NY - Evelyn D. Bockus, 87, of Gouverneur, died at home under the loving care of her family and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice on Monday, October 12th, 2009. 

Evelyn was born on May 13, 1922 in Madison, Connecticut to the late Nelson F. and Mary (Gates) Waters. She graduated from Ames High School in 1939 in Ames, Iowa. She then went on to receive her Bachelors degree at Michigan State College graduating in 1943. During World War II she was one of the first women to enter into the Marines M.P.  

Evelyn married Robert K. Bockus Sr. on March 19, 1946 in Athens, NY. Robert died on May 19, 1971. Evelyn worked as an assistant librarian at the Gouverneur Library from 1980 until July 2, 2006. She has lived in Gouverneur since 1946. She was a member of the Eastern Stars, the Gouverneur Museum and formerly of the American Legion in Lansing, Michigan. She did volunteer work at the Gouverneur Library and Museum. She also volunteered at the voting polls. 

Surviving is a son Clarence Bockus of Richville; three grandchildren Erin and Rick Rotundo of Gouverneur, Joseph and Chrystie Bockus of Malone and Jacob Bockus of Richville; and five great grandchildren. 

She is predeceased by a son Robert Kinny Bockus Jr. who died on August 25, 1993 and a brother Bruce L. Waters. 

Calling hours will be from 2-4 and 7-9pm on Wednesday, October 14th at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home with Rev. William Hart officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Gouverneur with military honors.
