RENSSELAER FALLS, NY - St. Lawrence County 911 Dispatch received a 911 call early this morning reporting that an infant had become unresponsive. The infant, 14-day-old Landen L. Measheaw had stopped breathing at some point while sleeping in bed with his parents. Police report that the infant's father, Bryan M. Measheaw, initiated CPR but was unable to revive the boy. He was transported to Claxton Hepburn Medical Center by Resselaer Falls Ambulance and was pronounced deceased at 4:08 am. by Dr. Todd. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed later today at Claxton Hepburn Medical Center. Police say that they are still investigating the matter. In the United States, there is a popular misconception that having an infant sleep with the parents is unsafe and the U.S. has a relatively low rate of co-sleeping. The World Health Organization however, recommends co-sleeping for the health and well-being of the child and it should be noted that two countries with the highest rates of co-sleeping, where it is the norm rather than the exception, Japan and Sweden, also have the lowest infant mortality rates in the world - behind only Iceland and Singapore. By comparison, the United States ranks 33.
