STAR LAKE –
Funeral services for Esther Rhodes Newtown, age 94, of Star Lake, formerly
of Waddington, will be held at French Family Funeral Home, Star Lake
on Friday, September 11, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. with Father Robert Decker
and Deacon Philip Giardino officiating. Calling hours will be prior
to the service on Friday at the funeral home from 12 until 2 p.m.
Burial will
be in Fairview Cemetery, Parishville following the service. The procession
is expected to be in the cemetery at approximately 4:00 p.m.
Esther passed
away on Tuesday, September 08, 2009 at the Clifton-Fine Hospital surrounded
by the love of her family. Esther was a resident of the hospital’s
skilled nursing unit. She received quality, loving care from the nursing
unit staff who has expressed their love for Esther and that she will
be missed.
Esther was
born on April 29, 1915 in Hopkinton, NY, to Kingsley and Nettie (Monica)
Rhodes. She married George N. Newtown on January 16, 1932. Mr. Newtown
predeceased her on December 17, 1988.
She is survived
by two sons and their wives; Gordon and Shirley and Garry and Dorothy
of Star Lake, two daughters and their husbands; Sonja and David Shampine
of Waddington and Janice and Robert Copenhagen of Palmyra, eight grandchildren;
Joanne, Kerry, Marcy of Alexandria Bay, Dean of Ohio, Kim of Fulton,
Michelle of Florida, Monica of Maryland, and Deanna of Waddington. She
is also survived by several great and great grandchildren and a niece,
Joyce Flint of Winthrop.
Esther was
predeceased by her sister, Aleatha Shatraw in 1996 and several nieces
and nephews that were very dear to her.
Esther had
a great love of cats, enjoyed time spent with family and friends, and
visits from her grandchildren. She was an avid reader and loved to play
bingo. She will be remembered for her green thumb and the beautiful
(and often enormous) houseplants she grew. Her family and friends will
always remember the delicious pies that she baked.
Esther was
a longtime member of the Eastern Stars and was a retired employee of
the Newton Falls Paper Mill.
Memorial donations
may be made in her honor to the Star Lake Rescue Squad or to the ASPCA.
