Ft. Covington Woman Wins Scholarship

Amanda Ellsworth, Ft. Covington, received a $500 AAUW Memorial Scholarship awarded by the St. Lawrence County Branch in memory of long-time AAUW member Fran Dixson (1921-2008), Potsdam, who exemplified a love of life-long learning. AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.The St. Lawrence County Branch of AAUW is pleased to announce that Amanda Ellsworth earned a $500 AAUW Memorial Scholarship. From Ft. Covington, Amanda graduated with a degree from the veterinary technology program at SUNY Canton in May.

This fall she will be attending Texas A&M University where she will major in marine biology. Amanda exhibited not only scholarship at Canton, but accepted leadership and community service positions on campus. She was a Resident Assistant, a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society and was a member of the Veterinary Technician Association, involved with many of the activities associated with both groups.

The 2009 AAUW scholarships were given in memory of long time AAUW member Frances “Fran” Dixson (1921-2008). A non-traditional student herself, Fran went to college in 1970, graduating with honors at age 55 with her BS in Elementary Education. She taught at Madrid-Waddington Central for 10 years. Following retirement, she traveled extensively in Europe and Asia and continued to participate in educational enrichment through SOAR.
