Combating Pandemic Influenza

1918 PandemicIn 1981, I published the first of nine review articles on the ability of lithium and antidepressants to stimulate immune function and defeat microorganisms. Evidence to date culled from the international medical literature has shown that lithium has antiviral and antibacterial properties, antidepressants antiviral, antibacterial, antiparasitic, and fungicidal properties.

Therapeutic claims are fortified when the mechanism is known: in this case, excessive synthesis of prostaglandins depress immune function and activate microorganisms, and lithium and antidepressants oppose prostaglandins. Both lithium an antidepressants prevent recurrences of flu-like colds.

If given to a person succumbing to HIVI, and if effective, lithium would travel quickly to the brain and immune system, stimulate immune function, block the ability of HINI to stimulate prostaglandin E2, and the replication of the virus. Prostaglandin E2 is largely responsible for the toxicity and lethality of HINI. Were lithium ineffective, rapid trials of antidepressants would be called for.

Of all the institutions that have ignored this knowledge, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers of Disease Control, CIDRAP, and the Department of Health and Human Services, HHS stands out. I would strongly recommend that readers write to Dr Fauci (NIH) Dr. Osterholm, (CIDRAP) Dr Frieden (CDC), and Secretary Sebelius (HHS) to enquire why.

Sincerely,

Julian Lieb, M.D
