Chris Young - The Man I Want To BeChris Young had one of the biggest hits of 2009 with “Gettin’ You Home” (AKA “The Black Dress Song”). With a new sexy ballad climbing the country charts and a major award nomination, it looks like 2010 is going to be another great year for Chris.

Chris, a native of Murfreesboro, TN, first gained national attention when he was named the Season Four (2006) champion of the singing competition Nashville Star. With youth, a killer voice, good looks and good songs on his side, it looked like country music fame was within spitting distance for this cowboy. However, his first single, “Drinkin' Me Lonely,” just missed the Top 40, peaking at #42, and its follow-up, “You're Gonna Love Me,” reached a disappointing #48. A third single, “Voices,” fared better, getting as high as #37, but it fell short of becoming a true breakthrough hit for Chris.

That all changed last year, with the seductive “Gettin’ You Home.” Co-written by Chris, Kent Blazy and Cory Batten, the lyrics involve a couple going out to a swanky restaurant for a romantic dinner date, only to be overcome by their hormones. They ultimately ditch the “white tablecloth and red wine” scene and hightail it home for some good, old-fashioned lovin’. Chris found himself with a long-awaited #1 hit.

On January 27, Chris received the good news that he’s up for an Academy of Country Music award for Top New Solo Vocalist, along with Luke Bryan and Jamey Johnson. This is one of the select fan-voted categories. If it were industry-voted, my guess is that the award would go to Johnson. But I think Chris could very well walk away with this one. After all, he was voted country music’s “Sexiest Bachelor” by Country Weekly readers years BEFORE releasing the “Black Dress Song,” beating out studmuffins who were household names. While sex appeal can’t win him an ACM, a diehard, loyal fan base like Chris’s can feasibly put that coveted trophy in his hands. We’ll find out April 18, when the awards ceremony takes place in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, if you want to get your two cents in, you can do so online beginning April 1. You may cast your vote for Top New Solo Vocalist, Top New Vocal Duo and Top New Vocal Group at www.VoteACM.com.

Chris’s latest hit, “The Man I Want to Be,” was written by Brett James and Tim Nichols. It’s the title track from his sophomore album on RCA. Enjoy the video here today!
