Carrie Underwood - Temporary HomeCarrie Underwood has recently acquired a pair of precious possessions. In December, her hockey player boyfriend, Mike Fisher, gave a her a big, honkin’ diamond engagement ring. And just last Sunday, Carrie picked up a Grammy award for “I Told You So,” her collaboration with Randy Travis. Unfortunately, Randy couldn’t be there to accept the trophy (his first Grammy in 21 years) with her, due to a snowstorm where he lives, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Randy thanked his singing partner via his website: “This is the first time that I was not able to be on hand to accept a Grammy. If it wasn't for the weather I would have thanked all the people who voted for us. A BIG thank you to Carrie for asking me to be part of this recording. She is an amazing talent and I am honored to win this with her.”

Very generous words of praise from Randy! “I Told You So” was originally a #1 solo hit for him in 1988. The duet version was made available as a digital single after the two singers performed it on “American Idol” last year.

Carrie’s latest hit, “Temporary Home,” started with an idea Carrie got while reading a self-help book called “The Purpose Driven Life” with her loverboy. (If someone as successful Carrie feels she needs to read self-help books, we may all be doomed. Just wanted to say.) Anyway, taking a phrase from the pages of that book, Mike suggested to Carrie that she write a song called “Temporary Home.” Carrie politely told him that while the concept was cool, the bulky title didn’t exactly roll off the tongue.

A couple days later, Carrie had a songwriting appointment with Luke Laird and Zac Maloy. En route to that meeting, Carrie had an incredible “EUREKA!” moment. She recounts: “It just hit me like a ton of bricks, just a flood of words and stories. I thought of a little boy in a foster situation, where he knows where he’s going… The place where he is isn’t where he should be, but he’ll get there someday.” (Source: TheBoot.com)

Carrie had her ideas for the song completely mapped out by the time she joined Luke and Zac. The first verse is about a little boy in a new and unfamiliar foster home. The second verse deals with a single mom and her baby girl, living in a halfway house. The final verse depicts an old man who is dying, but is at peace because he knows that his time on earth was just his “temporary home.”

Since Carrie’s ideas were so vivid and clear-cut, Laird says, he and Maloy basically just “filled in the pieces.” Ironically, when Luke got word that Carrie had cut the song for her “Play On” CD, he was in a nursing home to say goodbye to his dying grandmother. Needless to say, the song hit him on an emotional level that it hadn’t before.

So, what’s next for Carrie? Her “Play On” tour kicks off next month, with a March 12 stop at the Times Union Center in Albany, and a March 31 show at Rochester’s Blue Cross Arena. (Craig Morgan and new trio Sons of Sylvia are her opening acts.)

Also, Carrie is scheduled to sing the National Anthem before the Superbowl on February 7 in Miami.

As for the when and where and other details of her upcoming nuptials… We’ll just have to wait and see!

FYI, Carrie hates Twitter, calling it “organized stalking,” so if someone is tweeting as Carrie, it’s probably a fake!
