This Sunday is gonna be special for three reasons: #1, IT’S MA BIRTHDAY!!!! #2 Powerball lottery tickets go on sale in New York State for the first time. And #3, it’s Grammy night!
These days, we have more awards shows than we know what to do with. Sunday night, the 52nd annual Grammy Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles. The Grammy is considered the most prestigious honor in the music industry. Music fans have criticized the Grammys over the years for being out-of-step with popular culture and too conservative. That doesn’t stop the show from attracting a huge viewership and dramatically boosting album sales for the performers on the show.
For me, I like to watch the Grammys because it’s an opportunity for me to get a taste of modern music, other than country. Since I started working at Froggy 97, I somehow lost touch with popular Top 40 music, rock and Hot AC. How did this happen??? I used to read Billboard Magazine religiously, and memorize practically all the chart numbers that each song reached. I’d know who the songwriters were, the record labels, the band member’s names, where artists came from and how they got where they were. I guess I hear so much music at work, that I just shut it off when I’m at home. In the car, I listen to Froggy. I can’t, after all, be disloyal to my own radio station. CDs? I have quite a few, mostly country. The rest are Various Artists Time-Life compilations and Greatest Hits discs from the 80s and 90s. I never thought I’d see the day when I’d be ignorant of today’s music. I’m only gonna be 38 this Sunday… too young to a fuddy-duddy! I made a resolution this year to expand my musical tastes & add new tunes to my personal playlists. I’ve started to research popular artists, little by little, kinda dipping my toes in the water. Watching the Grammys will be sorta like jumping into the pool. Not the deep end, but up to my shoulders, at least.
Beyonce leads the Grammy pack, with 10 nominations. Taylor Swift is close behind with 8. Taylor’s crossover success has helped her greatly here, putting her in the running for both country and pop awards.
A special tribute to Michael Jackson will be among the show’s highlights. “Earth Song,” a 3-D mini-movie which was to have been part of MJ’s “This Is It” tour, will be shown for the first time, as part of a tribute to the King of Pop. Celebs participating in the tribute include Smokey Robinson, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion and Carrie Underwood. Target stores partnered with CBS to get millions of pairs of 3-D glasses out there so that potential Grammy viewers can enjoy this unique experience.
Country performers will include my very favorite group, Lady Antebellum, plus the Zac Brown Band and Taylor Swift. I was going to make predictions here, but I just don’t feel lucky, psychic or in any way intuitive… so many the best man/ band/ woman win!
Today, I invite you to enjoy the video for Jamey Johnson’s Grammy-nominated song, “High Cost of Living.” We couldn’t play this on Froggy because it mentions cocaine, smoking pot and includes the word “whore.” I’ll seriously laugh my ass off if this wins a Grammy. Is it possible?? We’ll soon find out.
